His mind shattered by the atrocities of World War I, Louis Destouches, alias Louis-Ferdinand Céline, went on to become a traveling public health doctor. He was also a virulent and radical anti-Semite, a racist and an avowed pro-Nazi, who contributed to the moral and political collapse of Vichy France. Céline alone raises the question of the writer's responsibility in society. For eighty years, admirers of the great writer have tried to minimize the significance of his anti-Semitic pamphlets and his political actions during the Occupation. Through the eyes of the writer's leading experts and the numerous archives at our disposal, this new documentary series places Louis Destouches in the context of his time to better understand the role he played in Nazi-occupied France and the place he still occupies today in our collective memory.
