Though the sides were initially equal with 6,000 men each, the Jacobites armed with swords charged the British line facing canister canon fire and ranks of musketeers. While their numbers were being decimated every minute the Jacobites managed to create a salient that quickly became a death trap of their own making as they became surrounded.
