Creating a film about the duo is both a necessary tribute and an opportunity to explore and illuminate a pivotal chapter in film history, offering new insight into twentieth century Italian society and its evolving customs. With more than 120 screenplays, they collaborated with the most important Italian directors from Monicelli, Risi, Comencini, Germi, and Sergio Leone to their close friend Ettore Scola, and earlier with Blasetti, Gallone, and Mastrocinque. Later, Scarpelli also worked with a new generation of filmmakers, including Marco Risi, Virzì, d'Alò, Archibugi, Troisi, and Radford. Together, Age and Scarpelli earned five Oscar nominations, becoming some of the most internationally respected Italian writers. Their films often tackled social and political themes, offering sharp, ironic portraits of postwar Italy.
