Her mother, Dr. Yuemin Liu, works exhausting night shifts at the town hospital, leaving Raolin longing not only for the magic of the movies, but also for her mother's attention-something always in short supply. When Raolin finds a single penny outside the movie theater-only half the price of a children's ticket-she embarks on a small but daring journey to claim a moment of joy for herself. Her attempts to bargain her way inside fail, sending her wandering to a back-alley bookstall where she trades her precious penny for a tiny red candy ball. But when Yuemin discovers the forbidden candy, Raolin faces punishment and confinement, intensifying her desire to both escape and make things right. Over the next days, Raolin secretly slips out through their window, listening to the film from behind the locked theater door, her imagination transforming the music into a vivid fantasy world full of color, dance, and possibility.
