It combines interviews with Lydia, archival footage and historical narrative. Lydia recalls her girlhood in Belarus after the Russian Civil War, including how her family's lands were collectivized, and the Nazi invasion and execution of family members and other villagers. She describes the destruction of her village by Nazi soldiers, the loss of family members, her escape with her parents and their flight to Germany as forced laborers. Lydia then describes her trek across Germany in advance of the Red Army, her life in a refugee camp, her immigration and life in the US and her eventual return visit to her native village. Written by
