The legal prescription is discontinued but affects Swedish drug policy for decades. In the mid-1960s, a couple of doctors in Sweden received permission from the Swedish Medicines Board to prescribe drugs to drug addicts. The doctors argued that a feeling of satiety would set in and that patients would voluntarily reduce their drug use if they were given access to drugs. In Stockholm, a clinic was run by the doctor Sven Erik Åström, where the queues were long and what was supposed to be an experiment with ten people swelled to over a hundred people.
