Van den Nieuwelaar was a versatile designer of modern, minimalist fixtures, lighting installations, and furniture. Inspired by Amsterdam's distinctive bollards and as a rebellion against the bourgeois oak furniture his parents sold, he conceived a unique cabinet design, the A'dammer. Van den Nieuwelaar firmly believed in his design and refused to sell his idea. Instead, he charged a percentage of each cabinet sold. Thanks to the royalties, he was able to make a living from his design-something he celebrated exuberantly with loved ones and friends. But the success was short-lived. Ultimately, the manufacturer turned against him, which spelled the beginning of the end for Van den Nieuwelaar. Written by
