The 1949 Shanghai exodus to Hong Kong helped create the territory's vibrant film industry led by Shanghainese director Chang Cheh. The film includes archival footage of the deadly communist-inspired 1967 violence in Hong Kong, which the local population rejected. The death of kung fu star Bruce Lee in July 1973 hit Hong Kong hard as the local population, with its own unique culture and freedoms felt trapped by the combined forces of the USA and communist China. The film's director Mark Tarrant lived in Hong Kong in the '60's and '70's and features in the film as an 8-year boy in Chang Cheh's 1972 movie 'Young People'.
