After a threatening interaction with WALTER (50s), the waiter, Red comes face to face with the man he is looking for, LUKAS EBBITTS (60s), sitting by himself in a dark corner of the room. Red claims to be a journalist from New York, who has traveled to Leukerbad to write a story on Lukas's incredible discovery. Lukas immediately sees through Red's facade but out of curiosity and suspicion chooses to play along to find out who this man truly is and exactly why he is there. After a tense exchange, a deal is struck. Lukas agrees to take Red up the mountain and tell him the story of finding the gold, in exchange for Red revealing the true purpose of his visit. The story climaxes on the 4th day right at the base of the mountain where Lukas discovered the gold coins. Without Lukas' knowledge, Red enters his cabin and discovers a rare book that exposes the truth about Lukas' past and true identity. The title of the book is Caesar's Cache. The journey into the mountains takes place over the course of three nights, each filled with hostile interrogative dialogue, as the two men continually try to dissect the true identity of one another. One night as the two sit drunken by the campfire, they realize that they are not so different from one another. It is as if they share a common history, but what history?
