Over the past decade, these former Special Operations veterans have deployed alongside scientists on countless marine conservation missions throughout the United States and the Caribbean. Here, however, in the warm, Pacific waters off Okinawa, where this four-man team of two Navy SEALs, one Army Green Beret and one Recon Marine will rebuild a coral reef that, 80 years ago, their predecessors destroyed, they will be asked to go deeper than they have ever gone before. By land and by sea, they'll explore the nightmare experiences of the 183,000 U.S. servicemen, 100,000 Japanese and 300,000 Okinawan civilians, who, from April 1 to June 22 , 1945, suffered through what can only be described as "Hell on Earth." From the suicide cliffs at the southern tip of the island to the spidery network of caves and heavily fortified positions that comprised the vaunted Japanese Shuri Line, to the island's offshore waters where as many as 2,000 Kamikaze attacks occurred and the behemoth battleship Yamato, pride of the Imperial Navy, made her final, ill-fated run. At every stop the men will ask questions - and occasionally they will find answers. Strolling the halls of National World War II Museum in New Orleans, they will listen to dozens of oral histories, ghostly stories from sailors, soldiers, airmen and marines who were there, but are no longer here. In the end, their journey will bring them to Okinawa's Peace Memorial Park where, inscribed on black granite walls, they will find 240,000 names - one for every man, woman and child who lost their lives during the Battle of Okinawa. Stark reminders of what the Japanese called "a typhoon of steel". Written by Force Blue See less
