Of these, 20,000 lost their lives on the front lines. To commemorate this, a group of 370 brigade members from 30 countries, accompanied by their families, visited some of the places that had been the scene of fighting during the Spanish Civil War: Albacete, Madrid, Getafe, Morata de Tajuña, Seville, Bilbao, Guernica, Valencia, among other towns, and finally, Barcelona. In January 1996, the Spanish government, led by Felipe González, granted the volunteers of the International Brigades the Spanish nationality that had been promised to them by President of the Republic Dr. Negrín. This video document captures images of the main events held in their honor in Catalonia, both institutional and grassroots. The Brigadiers, welcomed with enthusiasm and excitement upon their arrival in Barcelona, received an institutional tribute from the highest Catalan authorities in a solemn ceremony in the Catalan Parliament, where their generosity was remembered and their sacrifice in the fight for our country's freedom was acknowledged. The massive celebration organized for their farewell allowed for a warm expression of the public's affection for the Brigadiers and demonstrated that the memory of their solidarity lives on in us.
