The caller, Cathryne, is breathless and terrified, claiming that something -something huge- is chasing her through the forest. She can't see it clearly, but it's fast, powerful, and possibly inhuman. Meryl, unimpressed, half-listens while scrolling through celebrity gossip on her phone. She assumes it's either a prank or an exaggeration. Despite Cathryne's increasingly desperate descriptions -rows of teeth, claws, a tree hurled through the air- Meryl jots down sarcastic notes and puts off dispatching help, more focused on her tabloid feed than the caller's fear. As Cathryne scrambles to hide in a tree, whispering into her phone with the creature circling below, Meryl casually checks a procedure list and debates whether to involve park rangers or animal control. She even jokes with a coworker about the likelihood of the call being fake. Meanwhile, the noises on Cathryne's end -footsteps, growls, splintering wood- grow more intense. When Cathryne calls back after hanging up in frustration, Meryl finally sends officers to her location. But the delay may have sealed Cathryne's fate. In a final surge of noise and terror, the call ends abruptly, leaving only silence on the line. See less
