After fierce fighting, they liberated the town. But the next day the SS division 'Das Reich' on his way to Normandie recaptured Tulle. In ferocious reprisals, the SS executed 99 innocent men by hanging (9 June) and deported 149 other hostages to KL Dachau (10 June), were 101 eventually died.
