The media usually eagerly report on these events. But what is the importance of such an EU summit, and how relevant is it for journalists to be there? Bert van Slooten (editor-in-chief of Brusselse Nieuwe) and Hans Nijenhuis (EU correspondent for AD) talk about the perception of European summits. Why do these meetings seem so important? What do we actually see at a European summit, and what is left out of the picture? Van Slooten: 'It's pure perception. The image has to look good.' Nijenhuis: 'There can be a period of six, eight, ten, twelve, twenty-four hours between the start and end of such a summit. We don't see the heads of government during that time.'
