The doctor suspects it's cervical spondylosis and tells him to rest and wait for it to improve. Meanwhile, Megumi Hongo has started volunteering at a nursing facility. The staff there are so impressed that they offer her a paid part-time position. Feeling increasingly uncomfortable at the family-style restaurant where she's worked for years, Megumi gladly accepts. One day, Takuto is invited to Megumi's home for dinner. Megumi's mother, Shoko, immediately takes a liking to him. Back at work, Takuto's weak arm causes him to drop and damage a piece of furniture. Worried, he returns to the orthopedic clinic, where the doctor refers him to the neurology department at the university hospital. At the university hospital, neurologist Dr. Tanimoto runs a series of tests. When the results come in, he asks Takuto to bring his family back to discuss the treatment plan-only Takuto lies and says he has no family, insisting he can handle it on his own. Reluctantly, Dr. Tanimoto tells him the truth: Takuto has been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a serious, officially designated incurable disease. That night, Takuto can't sleep.
