David returns home, during a heart-felt reunion. Meanwhile, tensions rise between David Carpenter and his rivals, the Rainier crime family, led by the powerful John and Melinda Rainier, who run the five boroughs of the City of Pembina with an iron fist. David meets with the Rainier Estate, the residence of John and Melinda Rainier. John and Melinda Rainier are the most powerful couple in the City of Pembina, and are feared by everyone. The Rainier Estate is guarded like Fort Knox, guarded with rifles. Although everyone fears John and Melinda, David doesn't. John is business-oriented, although he isn't scared to use violence when it is necessary. Melinda is extremely merciless, and is extremely brutal and violent, per say. Throughout the episode, David and Mary-Beth's relationship is the B Plot. Mary-Beth will also have her own A plot. The Rainier crime family plays a major role in the franchise, later as the main antagonists of the Heart of the Dawn franchise. Along with the Messupi mercenary group, led by Steve Bridges, who was a friend of David, but thought he betrayed him, but David denies this, thinking it's just Steve's insecurities. Throughout the first season, Mary-Beth deals with internal struggles, like the impending death of her grandfather, which will be explored in the first season. And her uncle, Terence, who is very close with Mary-Beth and David. At first, he is a little critical of the marriage, but accepts David as her husband, after realizing how much they love each other. The couple is extremely inseparable.
