Due to his bold and open statements opposing the oppression in the country, Shamlou was prosecuted numerous times by the Iranian government . As a result, the regime did not allow publication of his work during the last three decades of his life. But how can it be that he has remained so popular amongst the different generations in Iran and how could he achieve such an important place in the hearts of both intellectuals and ordinary people?
