Back when it was started in 1981, few even knew what the word vegan meant. Considered the Original Soul Vegetarian, it's been a landmark in the famous South Side of Chicago for over 40 years. The brother and sister team that run the restaurant now always credit their father for being the inspiring leader who brought healthy, vegan food to Chicago. Their dad, famously known as Prince Asiel Ben Israel, was part of the African-Hebrew Israelite community. He traveled to Israel where he realized that he had a spiritual mission to help those back home in the Windy City who needed to switch to a healthier diet. He spoke of the connection between food and disease. So, that's the fascinating backstory. Today, what Soul Veg City is famous for is the food. They have a legendary hot bar where you can get 30 different veganized soul food standards like "rib" tips, mac and cheese and kale greens along with vegan drumsticks, hot vegetable, bean and grain dishes. They also offer a wide variety of fresh salads - all prepared daily with the freshest ingredients possible and 100% plant-based.
