It poetically recounts the science of environmental habitats that for millennia facilitated the survival of organisms and tells us how today, in these times of transition, their protection is key for the future. The film takes place in Japan, in the mystical island of Yakushima, where ancestral forests contain some of the world's oldest living trees, the Yaku Sugi. This remote mountain in the sea is a legendary place, with bursting waterfalls and unique fauna and flora recounted by the protagonists: Tessei Shiba, a forest elder, who returned to the island in his youth to save the cedar forest form devastation and Nadine Schutz, a young sound architect form Zurich, who responded to the island's calling to come and immortalise the voice of Yakushima by recording its sounds. Mayumi Mitsuhashi and young Kaori Arai give a voice to the surrounding sea. These Arna divers, who practice the ancient art of free diving to fish, have been diving mermaids for over 5000 years. Their dialogues become an emotional exchange between the past and the present to help find the keys for a more livable future. While the voices are from documented interviews, the narrative is poetic. All protagonists are driven by their love and desire to protect this sanctuary, a safe haven for all life forms. Through its story, Refugia reminds us of the connections and interconnections of our planet and how we must all be part of the Force that protects all living creatures. Thanks to the variety of footage ranging from macro to micro and the ambisonic sounds all recorded on the island, Yakushima becomes a mirrored reflection of our relationship to nature. The silent representative of all Refugia around the world. They are Refugia, where life will persist. See less
