Appearances, however, are deceptive. Behind her smile, Lesedi bullies and undermines the newly pregnant Halima with the slow drip of psychological abuse. But there is much worse to come as Femi approaches her seventh birthday. Halima is shocked to learn that Lesedi, and to her horror, Ali, have secretly planned to fly Femi abroad to undergo the traditional ceremony of female circumcision. Halima, appalled and disgusted, knows they will never stop and has no choice but to flee her home to protect Femi from the horror of FGM. The Refuge - a place of safety, a place of understanding, filled with women scarred by abuse and violence.
