Here, humans have disappeared, leaving their only trace in the gigantic ruins and the splendid monuments of their past glory. The new empire belongs to nature. The only humans who set foot here, when tourists depart, are biologists and naturalists who monitor the present species, some of which are particularly rare and difficult to spot. The temples and columns, majestic palaces, triumphal arches, and sacred fountains of the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill are now cliffs or rocky walls, dens, ponds, nests, and hiding places. The hill of the foundation of Rome and the large valley below, along with underground waterways and buried dwellings, form an enormous ecological niche for birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, rodents, and invertebrates that have developed a unique adaptation system to what remains of the ancient city. The only human inhabitants of the place are the nuns and monks who reside in the ancient convents atop the Palatine, like an island of space and time in the heart of the modern metropolis. From them and from the creatures adapted to this small planet dotted with the ruins of an extinct civilization, a possible perspective on the relationship between Humanity and Nature emerges.
