Inquiries as to the name and origin of these pieces resulted in various stories. Eventually, we met the women of the Sindhi Musulman communities who make and wear these distinctive embroideries known as 'mukke' from which the patchworks are made. 'mukke' is the fundamental component in wedding dowries and proud emblem of Muslim identity. The abstract patchworks are made from discards, bought up traders for a few rupees and transformed by entrepreneurs into expensive hangings. Ironically, the work is treasured within their community but the women have so far failed to benefit financially from the fruits of their aesthetic skill and labor. Written by
