Volissos is built amphitheatrically on the slope of a hill, on which is preserved a ruined trapezoidal Byzantine castle with six circular towers. In 412 BC the Athenians landed on the beach of Volissos, who defeated the Chios who defected from the alliance and desolated the area. The Castle of Volissos is built at an altitude of about 250 meters, in a strategic position for Northwest Chios, ensuring on the one hand visual contact with the coastline, on the other hand contact with Vigles in the event of the appearance of enemy ships. The raw material used for its construction is a local dark-colored rock with a high copper content. See less
