More importantly, their stories illuminate their insistence on giving back to their communities, thus serving the entire nation. They are pioneers of the Civil Rights Movement, and stand as examples of what an individual can accomplish despite their circumstances. All were raised in poverty, yet their stories are rich in experience. Their stories illustrate how they were able to break through barriers set by mainstream society and effect policy at national and state levels.
