The people can no longer endure the Russian regime, and the former Habsburg capital, once an appealing and charming city, is now a vast battlefield. Clashes break out everywhere; workers and students, men and women take up arms against the Soviet tanks. Casualties will total almost thirty thousand in two weeks. Desperate appeals come through on the radio, but the tragedy takes place amidst the world's indifference, and the Hungarian people will be left to face their destiny alone. This is the first event of the 20th century to be followed almost live by millions of people on television. Those images in black and white, somewhat vague, yet terrible and unquestionable, would shatter the dreams of many honest and earnest people around the world who dedicated their lives to the project of a more just society, based on Communism.
