Main character, Kyla, braids a client's hair in her mobile beauty salon, but the client hates it. She realizes doing hair is not for her. As she vents to her roommate, Katrina, Kyla decides to turn the mobile salon into a mobile beauty supply, and sets out to find a beauty supply distributor. Kyla calls the main distributors, but when they realize she's Black they keep her on hold indefinitely. She goes to a local beauty supply to ask Mark, the owner, for advice. He sees her as a competitor and provides no help. She realizes there's a systemic history behind the lack of Black-owned beauty supply stores and creates a plan to literally break into the beauty supply store and get product. Kyla "convinces" Katrina to help her burglarize the store, but the two get into an argument when it doesn't go as planned. Kyla ends up paying Mark full price for the goods and starts advertising her grand opening. On the day of the grand opening, Mark decides to help Kyla as the police try to shut her down. Out of this unfortunate moment, the two former opponents become collaborators. See less
