At least seven times before 2002, disturbing instances of animal cruelty and violations of scientific standards had been uncovered. Channel 4 news once aired footage of an HLS employee punching a beagle puppy in the face while a co-worker laughed. Secret recordings also revealed employees engaging in inappropriate behavior with female beagles, derogatorily labeled as 'scum.'
