At the same time, it's a story about the city, Berlin seen through the eyes of a worker, who came to Germany with a hope of a better life. The protagonist escaped from borderlines he faced in Poland. After many years, he discovers, living in Berlin he's facing the same borderlines, and the city no longer offers a life fulfilling dream. As a natural consequence, he finds another dream to fulfill.
