An old witch makes a scarecrow; with the help of the devil she endows this creature with life, and sends it forth to woo the daughter of her bitter enemy. Later Feathertop sees in the mirror not the reflection of the man she thinks him, but the thing he really is. Love makes him a man for the moment. Feathertop rushes to his creator, refuses longer to smoke the enchanted pipe which kept him alive, and falls at the feet of the witch, a heap of sticks and straw with a pumpkin head.
