Beginning of the journey in the Colón Island of the Bocas del Toro archipelago: Sophie meets Sophie Garcia, a tour operator.They walk through the town, meet Calypso Joe, a guitarist and then Orlando Hernandez , a Ngöbe craftsman.Then they ...See moreBeginning of the journey in the Colón Island of the Bocas del Toro archipelago: Sophie meets Sophie Garcia, a tour operator.They walk through the town, meet Calypso Joe, a guitarist and then Orlando Hernandez , a Ngöbe craftsman.Then they go to the Island of Bastimentos: they navigate with a dugout canoe through the mangrove: the see a sloth on a tree and arrive at Baya Honda: Juan Villagra receives them, on the way to the Bat Cave they see a beautiful red-orange frog : this cave was discovered in 1999 and now the visitor can see the frugivore bats of this cave.Back to Colón Island they go to the restaurant Doña Mara where the chef Joseph Archbold prepares a grilled squid.Then Sophie goes to the Island Urraca where Francine Roy manages n animal rescue center for monkeys: she manages bungalow for visitors and takes care for 4 species of monkey: Capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys and tamarins.The monkeys have cages, but they can cross a hanging bridge to go to another islet.Then Sophie is in Panama City where she meets Krin Sempf and they talk about the town: 1,8 million of inhabitants: the growth of the town because of the Panama Canal and later as financial center.But Karin promotes the ecologic wake-up of young boys and girls, she organizes marine biology workshops.At Santa Catalina Sophie meets Ben Harris , a guide and ecologic activist:; they visit the Coiba island : the ruins of a famous prison, a pond with a crocodile and then they go snorkeling to see sea turtles. Later Sophie travels to Boquete: she meets there Rolando Coss, a mountain guide: but first there go to the Lamastus estate:: coffee plantations, with Wilford Junior Lamastus and Vella Lamastus they speak about the Gesha (or Geisha) coffee variety which produce a very fine coffee and they taste three cups of coffee.Then at 3.am. Sophie and Rolando start the climbing of the Volcano Barú (3.474 meters) to see the sunrise , on the top of the volcano they meet other people waiting also for the sunrise (unfortunately the sky became very cloudy). We see also many interesting things about Panama: the fight against the red lion fishes in the Archipelago of Bocas del Toro: Ngöbe fishermen catch this predator and sell them to a restaurant: the cook makes ceviche with the white flesh of the red lion fish nd Sebastian Cardona make jewels with the scales and the fins of the red lion fish. We see the cocoa plantations , A Ngöbe woman shows how she prepares a drink with cocoa beans and the fine chocolates produced by Eric Ameth Reluz, a chocolatier who believes in the quality of the Panama cocoa. About ecotourism there is an interesting experience: traveling through the mangrove on a paddle board. And finally the Panama Canal: every year 14.000 ships are crossing the the 80 kilometers long canal: we can see in the lock of Miraflores how a great ship is pulled by a locomotive. Written by
