At the insistence of his wife Annie (Liane Balaban), he sets off in his canoe to put back a few beers, catch some turtles and simmer down. Paddling through a thick fog, George lands on a mysterious island - an antiquated penal colony outside Canadian waters. There, he comes across an ominous machine run by a manic military Officer (Julian Richings) whose own devotion to the old rules make him seem like a kindred spirit. However, when the machine's demented true purpose is revealed, George is forced to rethink his stubborn ways. An absurd re-imagining of Kafka's 'In Der Strafkolonie', set up in cottage country.
