For most of her life, young Bibi Haldar suffered from an ailment against which her relatives, friends, priests, chiromancers, old maids, jewel therapists, prophets and fools were powerless. She was advised to rub eucalyptus balm on her temples and to make pilgrimages to the tombs of saints. Her neck and shoulders were covered with amulets protecting her from the evil eye. Her fingers were adorned with stones that promised good fortune. Homeopaths advised her to put on weight, while ayurvedics suggested her to lose weight. She was advised to get up at dawn and recite Vedic verses at intervals. One day her worried father decides to call a local doctor for help. He proposes another treatment by diagnosing Bibi Haldar with love unfulfillment. Written by
