The screen starts transmitting images of their neighbours. The "malfunction" tells about the difficulty of communication (a word that should be very significant but it has been overused and now has no more sense) and about how objects of daily use tell about people that possess them much better than words and discourses can do. Because objects "possess" us, not vice-versa. But both things and persons break down. So, also the protective interiors of a house could turn into a jail.
