They come and he reads to them for two hours. Some fall asleep, some are interested, while others pretend interest. At the end all congratulate him effusively and drink to his health. He sends the play to a manager and awaits a decision with impatience. One morning, after receiving a batch of letters but not the one he desires, he falls asleep while smoking and begins day dreaming on his sofa. He imagines that he receives a letter from the manager accepting his play and promising $200 a week royalty. His friends meet him on the street and congratulate him. The first night audience cheer and throw flowers at him, the manager presents him with a watch as a token of his esteem, the leading lady crowns him with a laurel wreath, and afterward he entertains them all at supper, is toasted and responds with emotion. At this moment he is awakened by a knock at the door. The postman brings his manuscript and a letter from the manager declining it. Disgusted with life, he tears up the letter and throws the manuscript into the fire. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
