He retired from boxing in 1996 when he tested positive for HIV. In 1991, Morrison won fights against opponents James Tillis and former world champion Pinklon Thomas. He was given an opportunity to face fellow undefeated fighter Ray Mercer, the WBO title holder, on October 18, 1991.
