It tackles with both humour and honesty issues around ethnic and male identity, sexuality, adult responsibility, drug addiction, crime, religion (Islam) and language. Kalbe's four sisters provide the commentary on their brother's life, which the eldest describes as "a mass of confusion." Nevertheless Kalbe endears his audience throughout with his cheeky naivety and magnetic charm, even in his own frustration. Kalbe's emotional honesty remains absolutely intact as he struggles with a crushingly dysfunctional relationship with his gorgeous but manipulative girlfriend (court cases, abortions, death threats) though he is never quite able to make sense of it all in his cannabis-fuelled fug. Shot entirely on DV, "Kalbe's World" is an intimate portrayal of the much-talked about and oft feared phenomenon of "urban male youth." But unlike the rap videos that fetishize and the crime reports that seek to damn, rarely has the subject been handled with such non-judgmental sensitivity. Written by
