As you enter the borough, the town motto ...See moreIf you should find yourself in Iowa, driving along Highway 20 near Sac City you'd do well to jump north onto county blacktop D15 where the road will soon take you to Nemaha, Iowa (population 102). As you enter the borough, the town motto graces a large sign stating - "Nemaha, A MIGHTY Small Town". A few blocks later, on the other end of town another sign boasts of Nemaha's major claim to fame- "Nemaha, Home of the Farmall Promenade". The Farmall Promenade is an eight member, all male troupe of farmers who as four male- 'female' square dancing couples perform across the Midwest, at county fairs, town centennials and the like. They have a passion for the dance but this isn't your Grandpa's square dancing. The Farmall Promenade performs all the usual favorites, the Virginia Reel, Split the Ring, Lazy Old 'H', the Teacup Chain but what sets this troupe apart from the hundreds you will find across America is that these square dancers perform perched on top of antique tractors. Each summer while their crops are in the field these square dancers have cultivated an enthusiastic following among traditional square dancers, tractor aficionados, and folks just looking for fun. "Everybody Promenade" is a portrait of the Farmall Promenade- a tight knit group of Iowa farmers and friends who love performing but it is equally a portrait of a rural community struggling to keep farms solvent while keeping community ties strong.
