When any Western person is asked to imagine space, they will likely draw upon the same few blockbusters to inform the sounds they conjure in their minds ear. Echoes of silence is an educational short that uses archival footage and audio to explore how colonialism has seeped into the consciousness of widely accepted science fiction tropes. Excerpts from James Baldwin speeches and other anti-colonial voices are remixed with sound design from vintage sci-fi films. Afro-futurist and Native American films, among others from all corners of the world, offer a different view of the cosmos. Views that were unjustly sidelined along with the rest of precious indigenous knowledge. Echoes of Silence replenishes the cultural archives once depleted by colonialism. See less
