BOSS, an immigrant restaurateur struggling to make payroll for the next day, greets his dinner customers warmly as usual. BOGIE, one of the waiters, suggests BOSS send his customers at "table one," where a famous jockey is sitting, a bottle. There could be a "big tip." Boss obligingly sends the table an excellent wine. Next morning BOSS finds the illegible order ticket from Bogie's table, an inebriated scrawl. It dawns on him: it is a race tip. He checks the newspaper to confirm the details, and dashes off. Parking is full, BOSS parks in a residential area and sprints to the track, placing his bet seconds before the race starts. BOSS sees BOGIE at the bar and approaches to thank him for the "tip". What tip? BOSS pulls out the dinner ticket, which BOGIE explains isn't a "tip" at all, it's just the dinner order. As the race is called in the background, BOSS hangs on the announcer's every word, wondering what little voice it was that made him act. Written by Katerina Tana See less
