Upon closing their doors, businesses began to experience an exponential rate in vandalism and theft and, in response, began to board up their doors and windows, resulting in Seattle streets looking hopeless and forlorn. In response to the bleak-looking landscape running rampant through Seattle neighborhoods, collectives and NGO's banded together to have local artists paint over the wooden boards and planks, in a gesture to not only support local artists, but to also add much needed color and vibrancy amid such gloomy, polarizing times. As a result, hundreds of muralists took to the streets and began to add imagery, shapes and colors throughout the city which became the city's largest free, open gallery that was available to the masses, and provided a much-needed psychological reprieve for the city's inhabitants.
