Old Obediah Martin, acting on the principle that the early farmer catches the summer boarder, rises from his hay mattress with a soul yearning for vacationists. He connects with a huge trunk that proves a bit too much for him, and goes scouting for his man, Ima Simp. He finds Ima Simp suspended from a hook in a spare closet and detaches him. Ima then shows a flash of remarkable talent for the express business in the unstudied carelessness of his trunk smashing. Obediah Simp then goes through his morning's mail. He is dumbfounded to find a communication addressed to his maid, Marie Spareribs, advising her that she has fallen heir to $50,000, which is being sent on. Reggy Martin, Obediah's son, breezing in from Hawvawd, is acquainted by his father of Marie's good fortune, with the express paternal wish that Reggie make it his. Reggie shines up to Marie, who sees his little game, and decides to double cross him. Instead of eloping with him, as per her promise, she dresses Ima in her scenery, and substitutes him.
