John receives his mother's letter, but his wife persuades him not to go. Mildred, the daughter, prepares to go to see her mother, when she is invited to the artists' ball. John sends a birthday gift to his mother and Mildred does likewise, and Mrs. Wilson breaks down with sorrow.
