Its author Verena Stefan was a 28 year old Swiss living in West Berlin. Stefan rose to prominence alongside her book which sold more than 300.000 copies and got translated into several languages. She continued writing, mostly about herself and her family, later living in Bavaria and then in Montréal, Canada, where she died in 2017.
