The joy of walking up and down the aisles, carefully selecting a stack of movies to share with family or friends is sadly a thing of the past. Or is it? Melanie Mcinerney is the small but resilient owner of Network Video, an independent small business that has been in the area for over 30 years. Somewhat unsurprisingly, it is under threat, unable to compete with changes in technology that have seen streaming services obliterate the DVD rental market. But Melanie has one thing on her side. She is deeply connected to the area and people in the community. Everyone wants her to win but how can she with the way the world is changing? Can sheer grit and a never-say-die attitude save this local business? Or simply, can she hold on long enough to be to be the last DVD rental business trading in the city? Treading water month by month, it is now crunch time in the history of this business. The Throwback follows her journey and asks the question, what is the greater cost to the community when small businesses like this close down? Written by
