The family of the Prince Lionello kept in the park of their castle a living lion which symbolized the strength and generosity of the Lionello race. Daily the old prince pays a visit to the lion Sultan, and his only daughter, Tecla, also learns to love the beast. One day the old prince forebodes that his death was near and on his visit to the lion he entreats him to guard the family honor. Returning to his room he makes out his will, appointing as his sole heir his nephew, Charles, who was then in America making his fortune, provided he would marry Tecla. The young girl, unknown to her father, loves Robert, a lieutenant in the Navy. Her father's wishes regarding her marriage to her cousin whom she does not know makes her very unhappy, but in order not to distress the old prince she promises to obey him. The Prince Lionello dies, and Charles, the nephew, receiving the news, leaves the wild plains of the west to return to the old country as his uncle's heir. After the voyage by ship he is traveling on a train occupying a compartment together with another traveler, the adventurer, Martin Perez, and being very tired Charles falls asleep. Perez soon leaves the train and the porter is a great hurry takes by mistake the cap belonging to Charles. Unfortunately a terrible disaster shortly after occurs in which Charles loses his life. The next morning in his hotel Martin Perez reads in the newspapers an account of the wreck and sees his name among the list of the dead as his bag had been found near the body of Charles. The adventurer decides to take advantage of the situation, thinking that as Charles had been taken for him he would assume Charles' place. Opening the valise and examining the contents he learns the reason for Charles' return and determines to go to the castle as the prince's nephew. Perez is received with due pomp and becomes an inmate of the castle. He is shown around the grounds and at the sight of the lion recoils. The old lion Sultan seeing the stranger, takes a. great dislike to him and is thrown into an uncontrollable rage. The wedding day at length arrives and Perez shortly before the marriage hour goes to the chamber in which were kept the documents identifying him. Not in vain were the old prince's last words to the lion, for somehow knowing what was taking place, he bursts through his cage and rushes into the room. The wild beast and the man are alone together. By some miraculous power the impostor is able to leave the room without falling into the claws of the hungry and infuriated lion. The terror with which he is possessed almost maddens him, and the adventurer confesses the truth to his astounded listeners. Martin Perez is chased from the castle, and thus through the old lion Sultan, the family honor is retained and Robert, who has come to bid a last farewell to his sweetheart, is married to Tecla instead.
