His love being reciprocated they become engaged. Their peace of mind is disturbed, however, by a letter that Darmont receives from his wealthy aunt, whose heir he is. She tells him that she has met some delightful people, a Mrs. de Lansay and her daughter, Gabrielle, and that her heart is set on his marrying Gabrielle. Darmont w rites his aunt that he is already engaged, but that to please his aunt he will visit her as she requests. Gabrielle and her mother are really adventuresses and desire to get their hands on Robert's money to free themselves from debt. Robert visits his aunt and meets the de Lansays and while he finds Gabrielle charming, his heart is really true to his fiancée. To entangle him Gabrielle plans a mountain climbing party. When her plans have succeeded and she and Robert are alone on the mountains she pretends to be injured and when he comes to her assistance so works upon him with her wiles that he momentarily forgets himself and succumbs to her charms. However, on returning to the hotel, he accidentally comes into possession of a letter to Mrs. de Lansay, which conclusively shows that the marriage of her daughter to him was coldly plotted in order to obtain money and at once informs his aunt. Thus the plans of the de Lansays are set at naught. Robert returns to Chamonix and marries Marion. While they are on the honeymoon Gabrielle seeks revenge by obtaining a position as stenographer with Mr. Eddy and sets out to capture him by her wiles. He falls in love with her and proposes marriage, which she accepts. Robert and his wife return to find in Marion's father's fiancée the exposed adventuress. Robert endeavors to persuade her to give up the old man, but she refuses and only when a terrible fall in the mountains has brought her almost to her death does she repent of her designs and breaks the engagement.
