The wives are complaining, but nobody seems to care. Who will help them? Facing a crisis of his own, reptilian psychologist Dr Lance Backstock has always been a man of simple routines. Yet when a victim's wife and client of his asks for pills to put an end to her sleepless nights, he snaps out of his midlife paralysis. Some men get a sports car, some get a younger girlfriend, but Dr Backstock become fixated on the Tamworth disappearances, and falls headfirst into the neo-noir fantasies of his Raymond Chandler-obsessed mind. "There must be more to this caper," Lance says as he closes his office for the foreseeable, and indeed his interactions with amateur back alley surgeons and the entrancing local vape scene prove there is.
