James Whitney is told they were harmless affairs, greatly over-exaggerated by the press, and is induced to attend in masked disguise to judge for himself. An altercation arises between a man and woman. Whitney interferes and is unmasked in the fracas, and his identity closed. The church trustees refuse to believe his version of the incident, and the woman whom he befriended reading of his trial in the newspapers appears before the board and pleads for him. The trustees ridicules her remarks, and tell Whitney the woman is so interested in him he ought to marry her. Wounded by the unjust thrust, Whitney turns impulsively to the woman and asks her to be his wife. She consents, and they are wed. Several months elapse, and Whitney is penniless and despondent. His wife, who has learned to love him, seeks financial assistance from friends in her old haunts, and Whitney, thinking she has voluntarily gone back to her former life, cast her off and rushes to the church with the intention of destroying himself. He finds the reorganized board of trustees in session, discussion having arisen over the unjust expulsion of the pastor, and is offered his pulpit again. With heart overflowing with gratitude he dons the sacred vestments, while the woman, relinquishing him wholly to the church, whispers understanding to herself, "He was not for me."
