This is proven by the case of Mariola, who refuses to marry one of her tribesmen, because she is in love with a young farmer. The farmer is already married, but that makes no difference to Mariola, and, using all the wiles of her romantic nature, she soon leads him to urge an elopement. The following day, on her way to meet him, a babe crosses her path. She pauses and her heart melts as she watches his tiny hands clutching at the air. Taking him in her arms she walks on with him until she meets the man with whom she is to elope. The baby she holds is his son and when the farmer sees him he grows pale. Mariola realizes the situation and her determination to have the father for a lover fades instantly. She sends the father back to his wife with the baby in his arms. Written by
