The story of a city unprepared for modernism begins with independence and organic growth, interrupted in 1963 by a devastating earthquake. That same year, an international competition for the city center was won by Kenzo Tange, the founder of Japan's Metabolist movement. Together with Arata Isozaki, he applied Metabolist concepts outside Japan for the first time. Skopje became a global model of the future city, anticipating ideas only now being realized, though the plan was only partially fulfilled. Its raw brutalist architecture in exposed concrete, both archaic and futuristic, sought to create a new world-but was it a megalomaniac project unfit for life?
